Valery Obodzinsky

Valery Vladimirovich Obodzinsky (1942 — 1997) was a Soviet and Russian pop singer (tenor), Honored Artist of the Mari ASSR.


In 1962, he began performing at the Tomsk Philharmonic, then at the Kostroma Philharmonic. In 1966-1967 he worked in the orchestra of O. Lundstrom. In 1969, he became the first Soviet performer of The Beatles song. In 1970, he released his first LP.


In the 1970s, he became popular thanks to the songs "These eyes opposite", "Oriental Song", "Mirage" and others. However, his performances were often excluded from the programs due to the dissatisfaction of the authorities. In 1977, he left VIA Faithful Friends.


In the 1980s, he abused alcohol and drugs, and temporarily retired from the stage. In the 1990s, he resumed his career with the help of his common-law wife Anna Yesenina, recording an album of songs by Alexander Vertinsky. He performed in 1994 at the Rossiya Concert Hall.


Obodzinsky died of heart failure on April 26, 1997 in Moscow. He was buried at the Kuntsevo cemetery.
