The Love for Three Oranges, an opera by Sergei Prokofiev, is one of the best examples of a musical work for theatre stage of the 20th century. Prokofiev composed the opera in 1919 and first staged in Chicago in 1921. The composer himself was behind the conductor’s stand. The opera was based on the Italian play L’amore delle tre melarance by Carlo Gozzi. As it was in its literary prototype, the opera ridiculed inertness, anachronism and nasty taste. With the irony and sarcasm so characteristic of him, Prokofiev juggles with habitual musical forms and speaks about serious problems of the contemporary arts. The double CD features a legendary recording of the opera performed by the soloists, choir and Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio conducted by Gemal Dalgat.
