Firma Melodiya continues to acquaint music lovers with the work of the outstanding contemporary pianist from St. Petersburg Grigory Sokolov.
Sokolov achieved fame almost fifty years ago after his victory at the 3rd International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966. A pianist of a broad creative range, he has had classical, romantic and modern music in his repertoire. However, he is better known as an interpreter of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works. Grigory Sokolov is perhaps the only Russian pianist who lives up to the comparison with Glenn Gould in terms of performance of Bach’s music, combining intellectual depth and rational, constructive mastery with extreme emotional expression.
This LP features recordings of Partita No. 2 in C minor and English Suite No. 2 in A minor made at Sokolov’s recitals in 1982 and 1988.
