Melodiya re-releases, now digitally remastered, the 1973 record with Arnold Schönberg’s symphonic poem. Pelleas und Melisande was performed for the first time in Russia in 1912 under the baton of the composer at one of Alexander Siloti’s concerts in St. Petersburg. As long as almost an hour, the poem was written for a massive orchestral line-up in a free, eventful chromatic style that goes far beyond tonal thinking.
For a long time in our country, Schönberg’s music was barely studied and almost not performed. It was Gennady Rozhdestvensky who played an important part in popularizing the Austrian composer’s works. So, he recorded the symphonic poem together with the Grand Symphony Orchestra of the All-Union Radio.
