The Melodiya digital release features two orchestral suites by Valery Gavrilin, a classic of Soviet music of the second half of the 20th century. One of them is the suite from the ballet film Anyuta based on Anton Chekhov’s story Anna on the Neck. The suite includes the famous Tarantella. The other piece, Theater Divertimento, is less known and comprises six orchestral miniatures. Gavrilin’s music is filled with bright songful melodies and dramatic images, which distinguishes it amid the musical space of the post-war avant-garde.
