Sergei Dorensky

Sergei Leonidovich Doreński (3 December 1931, Moscow - 26 February 2020, Moscow) was a Soviet and Russian pianist and music teacher. People's Artist of the RSFSR (1988). Professor at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatoire.

In 1940-1950 he studied at the Central Music School with G. R. Ginzburg, in 1955 graduated with honours from his class at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatoire, and in 1957 completed postgraduate studies at the Conservatoire. Winner of the Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students in Warsaw (1955, first prize and gold medal) and the International Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro (1957, second prize).

In 1957 he began his teaching career at the Moscow Conservatoire, and since 1979 he has been a professor. In 1978 he was elected Dean of the Piano Faculty and has since worked in this position for almost 20 years, combining it with the Chair of the Special Piano Department (1994-1997). In 2007 he was again appointed Head of the Department of Special Piano. Among Dorensky's pupils are prize-winners of many international competitions: Nikolai Lugansky, Denis Matsuev, Vadim Rudenko, Pavel Nersesyan, Alexander Shtarkman, Stanislav Bunin, Olga Kern, Fyodor Amirov, Andrey Pisarev, Vladimir Rumyantsev, Ekaterina Mechetina, Philip Kopachevsky, Nikolai Kuznetsov, Maxim Kinasov and others.

Honorary Professor of the Ufa State Academy of Arts (2003). Full member (academician) of the Russian Academy of Creativity.
