Melodiya’s archival and historical project features broadcasts of the concerts during the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s first tour in Moscow in January 1967. This album includes the recording of the January 8 concert under the baton of composer Pierre Boulez, the “king of the 20th century avant-garde.” His arrival in the USSR (as the orchestra’s “second conductor”) was a sensation. For the first time after a long break, the music of the Second Viennese School was performed on the stage of the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The program also included works by Stravinsky and Debussy. Some selected excerpts from this first performance with Boulez were released as a limited edition in 1983. Now, 56 years later, the recording of the first performance is released in its entirety for the first time.
