Melodiya’s archival and historical project features broadcasts of the concerts during the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s first tour in Moscow in January 1967. This album includes the recording of the January 10 concert under the baton of composer Pierre Boulez, the “king of the 20th century avant-garde.” The program of Boulez’s second performance (the first took place on January 8) also includes the works of Schoenberg and Webern (two composers of the Second Viennese School), as well as Debussy. However, Boulez’s own piece, Éclat, and Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 2 with John Ogdon are the trump cards. Some selected excerpts from this performance with Boulez were released as a limited edition in 1983. Now, 56 years later, the recording of the performance is released in its entirety for the first time.
